Here at Natural Power & Light, we think that the number one thing we can do to help everyday people, and the environment, is to inform, educate, and spread the word about alternative energy. Clarification of information and dispelling of rumors is our goal. To us, the best way to accomplish this is to devise a vehicle to get these technologies directly into the hands of everyone, to deliver actual day-to-day firsthand knowledge and experience with these systems, to remove the "exotic" from the equation, and to prove that all of this can be done without unlimited funds.
Our solution to this quandary is to build the Eagle cabin, very similar to our home. Named after the "Eagle" lunar lander from the Apollo 11 moon mission, the Eagle will be an offgrid, stand-alone chalet-style vacation cabin. It will generate the electricity to sustain itself from solar and small wind resources. Climate control will be derived from the use of geothermal heating and cooling. Rainwater will be harvested for non-potable use. Solar thermal, and excess output from the small wind generator, will supply hot water to the cabin and hot tub. Eventually, we will include an electric vehicle with solar charging station.
The Eagle will be located in the hills of eastern Tennessee, 70 miles from Bristol Motor Speedway, 50 miles from The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the foothill towns of Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg, well within the range of an EV. We intend to partner with the Bristol track, and the town of Gatlinburg, to install solar charging stations at those destinations.
The cabin will sit on 10 acres of forest, with foot trails crisscrossing the property, and a small pavilion perfect for relaxing, observing nature, or an afternoon picnic. Water sports are available, Cherokee Lake being only minutes away. Cherokee National Forest is a short drive, as well. Recreational opportunities abound.
The Eagle will be built with lumber and stone harvested on-site, sustainability being the top priority. All other materials will be sourced locally, when possible. It will be furnished with family antiques, emphasizing reuse
.
Sounds like a wonderful project, doesn't it? The last obstacle is to fund it. In keeping with our "abandon wall street" philosophy, we refuse to utilize normal financing avenues. Since the project is unique, funding should be as well. We have chosen to begin with an effort to access web based crowdfunding sources. In this scenario, we publicize the project and receive pledges toward such, and offer rewards for those pledges. In this case, rewards will consist of vacation visits to the Eagle. Larger pledges will qualify for free visits with choice of dates. Other pledges will yield discounts ranging from 90% to 20%, on a sliding scale based on pledge size. Details have yet to be finalized. Pledges are held in escrow, and if full funding is not reached, funds are returned.
We present this project, at this stage, to gauge interest. Our philosophy is to assemble a team prior to scheduling the game. This project has been refused by one crowdfunding website, and is currently under consideration by another. This project, with the associated rewards, seems highly compatible with this type of funding. Do you agree? Would you like to participate? If so, please let us know via the "contact us" page on our websites, or our Facebook page. Thank you for your interest in our work!
